The app
Accounts, credits & billing
How your account, your AI credits, and billing fit together — written plainly, because you should always know what a thing costs before it costs it.
On this page
Calliope’s money model has one guiding rule: reading and writing your own book is free; only Calliope’s own AI costs anything, and it always tells you. Here’s how the pieces fit.
Accounts
You can start writing without an account. When you sign in with Google, your local draft becomes a book on your account and syncs across devices. Signing in is also what unlocks the AI features, since those need a place to meter usage.
Your account settings live under a handful of clear routes:
/account/api— your Writer API keys;/account/mcp— connecting an AI client over MCP;/account/connections— connected apps (like Google Drive), and where you revoke them;/account/subscription— your plan, allowance, and usage.
Multiple books
Signed in, you can keep as many books as you like — create, rename, and switch between them. The app remembers the one you were last in.
Credits
AI usage is paid for with credits, and credits are just euros. Calliope shows your balance in real money (e.g. €0.74 left), not an opaque points currency, so the number always means something. Every AI action draws down a small amount as it runs, and you can see it happen.
- Reading and writing your book is free — the editor, structure, Map, marginalia (by hand), and export never spend a thing.
- Calliope’s AI spends credits — chat, consistency checks, entity detection, synopsis generation, and card suggestions.
- New accounts get a small allowance to try the AI before paying anything.
- Running out simply pauses the AI (you’ll see a calm “out of credits” state) — your writing is untouched. Top up and carry on.
You decide where credits go with the spend governor: independent switches for Chat and Studio assistance, both on by default, that block a category’s spend before any cost is incurred.
Buying credits
When you want more, Calliope sells prepaid credit packs — one-time purchases, no subscription — with larger packs carrying a bit of bonus balance. Current packs and prices are on the pricing page; checkout is handled by Stripe, and prices are shown before tax, with VAT added for your locale at checkout.
The subscription
There’s one subscription, and it exists for a specific reason: it’s what lets a connected AI client write back into your book over MCP, and it’s what unlocks prose writes on the Writer API.
- €12 / month, or €99 / year (the yearly works out well below monthly).
- It includes a €10 / month Calliope-AI allowance — a bucket of AI usage that’s spent before your prepaid credits and works across both the web app and your connected client. Overspend simply falls through to your credits.
If you only write in the app, you never need the subscription — credits cover the AI, and everything else is free. The subscription is for people who want their own tools to write into their canon. The full reasoning is in the MCP docs.
Plan & usage in one place
Your /account/subscription view puts it together: how much allowance you have left this period, your prepaid balance, which one is being spent first, your plan status, and your recent AI usage — so there’s a single honest answer to “where did my credits go?”
